The material is the result of search and seizure operations carried out by the authorities in recent years

This morning, December 3, National Day to Combat Piracy, ABES (Brazilian Association of Software Companies) started the destruction of more than 2.1 million of CD's and DVD's containing illegal software.

The material is the result of search and seizure operations carried out by the authorities in recent years and was stored under the responsibility of the entity that is the faithful depositary of the material until it received judicial authorization to be destroyed.

The entity's Legal Director, Dr. Manoel Antônio dos Santos, explains that the crime of software piracy brings concern not only to the technology sector and to the consumer, but also to society by failing to collect revenues and taxes, which could revert in the form of benefits for education and health, in addition to being directly linked to organized crime.

“It is also important to highlight that, through ABES - an entity that represents the sector - software companies injured by the crime of piracy still need to bear the costs of storage and logistics of this material seized for years until the process is concluded and the material receives authorization to be destroyed ”, explains Dr. Manoel.

The destruction will be carried out by the company Plasnoi Comércio de Plásticos, by means of a grinding mill, which fragmented all the material for recycling.

According to the lawyer, when ABES started working against software piracy in Brazil, in the 1980s, the piracy rate reached more than 90%. Today, after a lot of awareness work and new ways of selling software licenses, the index has dropped to 50%, but it is still worrying. With the migration of a large part of piracy to the virtual environment, the entity has invested heavily in its service of Internet Monitoring and in Anonymous Reporting Portal against Software Piracy http://www.denunciepirataria.org.br/.

According to the entity, in 2015, until the month of November, ABES 'Internet Monitoring service managed to remove around 65 thousand ads, links and websites with content that gave access to files that violate the Software Copyright of the entity's associates.

“We achieved a significant decrease in the last few years, but it took more than three decades to still live with half of the computer programs used in Brazil without authorization to use. For this reason, we know that there is still a lot to be done about Intellectual Property in Brazil ”, says Dr. Manoel Antônio dos Santos.

SCHEDULE
Location: Plasnoi Comércio de Plásticos
Address: Rua Ibituruna, 494 - Parque Imperial - São Paulo / SP
Date: December 3
Opening hours: from 8:00

About ABES
ABES, the Brazilian Association of Software Companies, is the most representative entity in the sector with around 1,600 associated or associated companies, distributed in 23 Brazilian states and in the Federal District, responsible for generating more than 120 thousand direct jobs and annual revenue US$ 20 billion per year.

The companies associated with ABES represent 85% of the turnover of the software development and commercialization segment in Brazil and 33% of the total turnover of the IT sector, equivalent in 2014 to US$ 60 billion of sales of software, IT services and hardware.

Since its foundation, on September 9, 1986, the entity has exercised the mission of sectorial representation in the legislative and tax areas, in proposing and guiding policies aimed at strengthening the value chain of the Brazilian Software and Services Industry - IBSS, in defense intellectual property and combating piracy of national or international software and in supporting initiatives to promote research, development, innovation and the development of national software.
